Our story
Why I started HostTaxDesk
I’m Jim Hanseder. I’m a single dad, and I rent out my own places on Airbnb: a condo at Mt Hood in Oregon and a unit near Truckee, California.
I assumed Airbnb handled the taxes. In my county, it didn’t. Clackamas County charges a 6% lodging tax that the host has to file every month, and I found out late. In October 2026 I caught up, and the late penalties and interest really hurt. They were completely avoidable, and they’d have kept growing every month I didn’t know.
When you’re raising kids and running rentals yourself, you don’t have time to learn every county’s portal, remember a return for a month with no bookings, or notice that a platform collects one tax but not another. You find out when the letter comes.
The big tax software wanted a $299 setup fee and $39 a month per property. So I’m building the service I wanted: simple, fairly priced, and focused on the counties where hosts actually get caught out.
What I promise our clients
- Hands-off. We file and pay for you, from your own account. You shouldn’t have to think about it.
- Your money never touches ours. Here’s exactly how that works.
- Sourced, not guessed. Every rule we cite links to the county or state that publishes it.
- Honest pricing. $19 or $29 a property a month, 25% off extra properties, no setup fee for founding clients. See pricing.
